Good afternoon, Ian Bazalgette Community.

Today marks the fall equinox. “It is another time of celebration; it is another time of reflection; and, also to prepare (for) how we are going to go into the next season...” Saa’kokoto, Fall Equinox Teachings (2021). This day heralds the shifting of the seasons; as we say farewell to summer, we notice the days grow shorter, a chilly crispness in the morning air, and leaves start to turn colour. O'ko (Blackfoot for fall) is an important time of gathering and preparation. Many signs and teachings come from the land during this time. It is also an important time to remember that the weather can be unpredictable as we approach fall and winter, despite the unsesonably warm weather we are currently experiencing.

Urgent | Demographic Verification Forms Compliance

The deadline for families to complete Demographic Verification Forms passed on Monday, Sept.15. Currently, approximately 28% of students at our school have not completed a Demographic Verification Form for the 2025-26 school year.

On Tuesday, Sept. 16 an overdue reminder communication was sent to parents / legal guardians who have not completed Demographic Verification Forms for the 2025-26 school year. This communication will continue to be sent throughout the months of September and October, with the final overdue reminder being sent on Monday, Oct. 27.

Important | These forms are a legal requirement from Alberta Education for funding purposes. If forms remain incomplete, it may result in a reduction in funding for the Calgary Board of Education.

Truth and Reconciliation Week (September 22-26)

Students will be engaging in reconciliatory learning activities over the course of the week and all day on Friday. This year, as a school, we are reflecting on the question, “How can you be a good ancestor?” in the context of reconciliation. Our learning and work will culminate in a creative display which will live at the front entrance of the school for the remainder of the school, demonstrating our collective commitment and hopes for reconciliation.

Orange Shirt Day

Orange Shirt Day is on Thursday, September 25. Students and staff will wear orange shirts (or articles of clothing) to honour those who attended residential schools and to demonstrate a commitment to reconciliation to ensure that every child matters and feels welcome, safe, respected, and cared for in their learning community every day. Orange Shirt Day began in 2013 when residential school survivor, Phyllis Webstad, shared how her orange shirt was taken away on her first day at residential school. For more information, go to here
