Personal Mobile Device & Social Media Use in Schools
The implementation of personal mobile devices and social media use in schools is now one month old. We have spent the month educating students about the reasons why this has been implemented in Alberta, and increasingly around the world. There is room for 25 students to join this amazing program. It will continue from September 24th and be bi-weekly until the end of the school year.
Letters must be returned with a parental/guardian signature to attend.

To raise much needed funds for the school, the Ian Baz Parent Fundraising Society is registered to work a casino at Pure Casino on Dec 16-17. We need volunteers to fill several positions.
Please see the volunteer positions and a brief description for each position.
What's Happening in… ?
Research on best adolescent learning has shown importance must be given to creating curricular learning tasks that bring independent ideas and facts together under larger unified concepts - showing how what we learn applies to the world. This year, we will be trisecting the year under three conceptual lenses, using Niitsitapi values (Blackfoot Nation; Piikani, Kainai, Siksika) as guiding thoughts. These big ideas include being aware of the environment though observation, that our universe often contains balance, and that we should aim to transfer what we know to others.
- Kakyosin | Be aware of your environment; be observant
- Aoahkannaistokawa | Everything comes in pairs (balance)
- Pommotsiiysinni | To transfer something to others

MATH
Students will begin working with percents. They also have a unit test covering divisibility, prime numbers, composite numbers, and prime factorization.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Grade 7 students will continue to build their understanding of Treaty 7 Indigenous groups. They will also work to complete their poster project this week.
GRADE 8
ELA
Expository instruction will continue this week with grade 8 students, as they are expected to write a mini- essay responding to an article on the theme of advocacy and injustice. SCIENCE
Last week, students studied solubility, identifying unsaturated, saturated, and supersaturated solutions using tables and graphs. This week, they will wrap up the topic of solubility and explore various separation methods. Students will also launch their bottle rockets.
MATH
Students will have a quiz on percents, conversions between decimals, fractions, and percents, including values greater than 100%and less than 1%. We will wrap up our unit on percents, which includes calculating the percent of a number using the percent equation.

What’s happening in Computer Science?
Q: Why was the computer cold? Answer: It left its Windows open!
In the first week of October, Computer Science students continued to participate in the Minecraft design challenge designing and building themes such as Nightmare before Christmas and various structures around the world. Each Minecraft Design Challenge provides students
with an opportunity to navigate through a customized virtual representation of their world, interacting with technology design concepts and being observant with details with their builds.
Looking into October, students in Computer Science will continually complete independent work in the following four areas: 3D printing, Coding, Designing and Robotics. Students will be learning how to 3D print, and create their own gadgets. Students will experience guided design projects based off of the processes that real-world professionals go through every day.
What’s happening in Foods?
This week in Foods, we started our Baking Unit. Baking is a science and it requires precision to achieve a good end result. Students will be challenged in this unit to listen to directions and to follow directions to a "T".
Theory
Students were shown a cooking video on how to make "Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies". We also talked about the drop cookie method. “Drop cookie” is a term applied to cookie recipes where bakers “drop” cookie dough from a spoon or cookie scoop onto a baking sheet, rather than roll it out or cut it into specific shapes.
This week in the kitchen
Students made Classic Chocolate Chip cookies.
Friday Career Chats
We looked at the careers of a Banquet Manager and a Restaurant Manager.
What’s happening in Drama and Leadership?
Drama
This week in Drama we will be continuing our work with improvisation, as well as beginning to look at vocal techniques to convey character, emotion, and story. Students will examine aspects of voice acting such as inflection and tone to help them begin developing vocal character.
Leadership
This week in Leadership, students will be preparing a 1-minute speech on a topic of their choice as a part of our public speaking unit. Students will rehearse their speech using the techniques and speaking strategies taught in class to help them develop confidence in their speaking skills.
What’s happening in Construction?
Grade 7
Students have been preparing to glue their shelf projects together to move on to the next and final step, finishing. To finish their shelves, students will learn about the different type of wood finishes, as well as how to apply some of them. They will soon be moving into their small sorting tray project before designing their own small project.
Grade 8
Students continue to refine their skills with the stool project. Many students have been taking a creative approach to this scrap wood project to start off the year. After this, students will be designing and creating their own projects.
Grade 9
Students have been working hard on their toolbox project, and many are now finishing their final cuts and have begun gluing their toolboxes together. Students will then learn how to apply stain and a topcoat to their projects so they will be ready to take home soon. Following this, students will be designing and creating their own projects.
What’s happening in Art?
Grade 7
Students are diving into understanding the human face and how light and shadow works with objects, creating three dimensional drawings. They will begin to learn several transfer processes to get the contour lines of their portrait picture onto art paper as well as the specific values present in their reference images.
Grade 8 and 9
Art students will continue to explore the human eye using photographs of their own eyes as reference images. They will begin to learn several transfer processes to get the contour lines of their eyes onto art paper and begin to narrow down which medium they will choose to create their final eye art piece.
