Overflow School Designation for New Grade 7-9 Regular Program Students Residing in Cornerstone

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,

Due to continued enrolment growth at Terry Fox School, the school has reached its capacity and will be unable to accommodate additional students who reside in the Cornerstone community for the 2023-24 school year and beyond.

Effective immediately, the following changes will be implemented for new students living in the Cornerstone community:

  • All new Grade 7 to 9 students designated to Terry Fox School who cannot be accommodated at Terry Fox School will be overflowed to Ian Bazalgette School.
    • Ian Bazalgette School is in the community of Forest Lawn at 3909 26 Ave SE Calgary, AB T2B 0C6, phone 403-777-7360
  • Due to the anticipated enrolment growth in the Cornerstone community, space at Ian Bazalgette School may become limited during the 2023-24 school year. Once the school is filled, any additional registrations for the 2023-24 school year will be overflowed to Ernest Morrow School.
    • Ernest Morrow School is in the community of Forest Lawn at 1212 47 St SE Calgary, AB T2A 1R3, phone 403-777-7800

All Grade 7 to 9 students who live in the Cornerstone community and attend the overflow schools, Ian Bazalgette School or Ernest Morrow School, will be placed on a call-back list and offered a place at Terry Fox School if space becomes available.

No Changes for Current Students at Terry Fox School

Current Grade 7 to 9 students attending Terry Fox School will remain at the school for the 2023-24 school year and moving forward until they transition to high school, provided they do not move out of the school boundary.

Changes for Next School Year for Cornerstone Students Overflowed to Ernest Morrow School

  • For the 2024-25 school year, Ian Bazalgette School is anticipated to have sufficient space to accommodate all Cornerstone students overflowed from Terry Fox School.
  • Students from the Cornerstone community may transfer to Ian Bazalgette School or remain at Ernest Morrow School until they transition to high school.
  • Transportation services from the Cornerstone community to Ernest Morrow School will be provided for one school year following the end of the overflow to Ernest Morrow School. We anticipate the overflow to Ernest Morrow will not be required after June 2024. This means that after June 27, 2025, there will be no transportation service from Cornerstone to Ernest Morrow School.

Why is this change happening?

There have been continuous registrations for Terry Fox School from new students living in the Cornerstone community at a rate higher than what is normally seen at the school. For this reason, the changes must be put in place to ensure the safety of all students and staff and manage enrolment at Terry Fox School.

What is a call-back list?

If space becomes available in Terry Fox School during the school year, that space will be offered to students on the call-back list who are currently attending the designated overflow schools, Ian Bazalgette School and Ernest Morrow School.

Students remain on the call-back list while they attend the designated overflow school. Students will be removed from the call-back list if they move out of the Terry Fox school boundary or transfer from their designated overflow school.

Any new registrations received from the Cornerstone community for the 2023-24 school year will be added to the call-back list based on priority designation and the date and time of their registration.

The lottery process will be followed for Grades 7 to 9 for the 2024-25 school year and beyond. For more details on how we determine priority, please visit our website.

How do I register for the 2024-25 school year?

Students currently in Grade 6 from the Cornerstone community who will be entering Grade 7 at Terry Fox School for the 2024-25 school year will automatically be included in the lottery.

New students from the Cornerstone community in Grades 7 to 9 must register for Terry Fox School. To be included in the lottery, registrations must be received by noon on Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2024. Registrations received after the lottery date will be added to the appropriate priority level on the call-back list in the order received.

If unsuccessful in the lottery, students will automatically be registered at the overflow school.

For more information on how to register, please visit our website.

Transportation for students attending the designated overflow school.

Students are eligible for transportation to their designated school or overflow school if they live beyond the walk zone. Overflowed students will receive transportation to and from Ian Bazalgette School or Ernest Morrow School. Please note that transportation fees apply to overflow situations.

In the CBE and across the city, we are experiencing a school bus driver shortage that may impact the mode of service provided. Please be assured that we are doing everything possible and working with our partners to restore reliability to transportation services.  Visit Busing & Transportation for more information, or to register for transportation, visit MyCBE.
