Good Morning, Ian Bazalgette Community!

Prior to Spring Break, we bade Ramadan farewell – the holy month of fasting. For many of our families it is a joyful celebration of breaking the fast, offering gratitude, and fostering community. Similarly, at the end of this week, many of our families will be observing Easter as part of their traditions. May this holiday bring hope, renewal, and togetherness for those observing it.

Attendance Reminder

In the weeks before and after Spring Break, drops in attendance are common. We appreciate everyone's hard work and commitment to keeping students learning and engaged! Showing up for school has a huge impact on academic success. Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students attend every day and understand why attendance matters – both for school and for future employment.

As long as your student is healthy, please encourage them to come to class. If you have questions about attendance due to health or mental health concerns, please contact Administration, Student Services, or your child's teachers.

Grade 9 Farewell – Coco Brooks Pizza Fundraiser

Grade 9 students are raising funds for their June farewell through a Coco Brooks Pizza fundraiser. Orders are online only (no cash orders, please). Grade 7 and 8 families are more than welcome to order too! The online store is open now and closes April 22. Items will be delivered to the school on May 17 for student distribution.

Opt-In | Human Sexuality | Health and Life Skills

In accordance with Section 58.11 of the Education Act, Alberta schools must obtain written parental consent before providing instruction that deals primarily and explicitly with human sexuality, gender identity, or sexual orientation. Students cannot participate in this portion of the curriculum unless consent is explicitly granted.

As part of the Alberta Program of Studies, junior high students take Health and Life Skills, which includes age-appropriate learning about human sexuality within the "Wellness Choices" unit. Your student's class will begin this topic on or after April 13, 2026. Consent is required by April 6, 2026. Physical copies have been sent home; please contact your student's Health and Life Skills teacher if you need an additional copy.

Next Year School Planning

If you are planning not to return to Ian Bazalgette for 2026–2027, please let us know as soon as possible. This reminder does not apply to current Grade 9 students.

Students currently enrolled in the Science Program will be automatically re-enrolled for next year. Families of Science Program students do not need to submit an Expression of Interest on SchoolEngage.

Lunch and School Supervision

The local community centre and nearby strip mall are open to students at lunch, as the school supports junior high students with growing levels of freedom and responsibility. However, there is no staff supervision at these locations. Please speak with your student about being aware of their surroundings when in public spaces.

We remain a closed campus at lunchtime. Students need to bring their own lunch or eat lunches provided by the school. Microwaves are not available for student use. The main office is unable to receive Skip the Dishes, DoorDash, Uber Eats, or similar deliveries – drivers will be asked to return the order to the restaurant.

School Fees

Semester 2 option and complementary course fees have been applied to student accounts in MyCBE. Please pay now. Please note that fee waivers do not apply to complementary course fees. There are also some outstanding fees from Semester 1 that must be paid in full. For more information, visit the school fees page or see how to pay fees through your MyCBE account.

Personal Mobile Devices Policy

Personal mobile devices include any device that can communicate with or access the internet – such as cell phones, tablets, gaming devices, laptops, or smartwatches – as well as devices capable of communicating with a mobile device, such as headphones, earbuds, and Bluetooth speakers.

These rules apply to all students, with exceptions for health and medical needs, specialized learning needs, and educational purposes:

  • CBE will block student access to known social media platforms on school networks and devices for all grade levels.
  • Grades K–9: Personal mobile devices are not permitted during the school day. Devices brought to school must be out of sight and powered off or silenced, stored in backpacks, lockers, or designated areas – or better yet, left at home.
  • Grades 10–12: Personal mobile devices are not allowed during class time unless permitted by a teacher for a specific learning task. Devices must be silenced or off and stowed away.

If a student uses a personal mobile device in class without permission, CBE will work with the student through a progressive discipline policy. In rare cases where a student does not respond to interventions, the device may be banned.

Psychological Services

We are pleased to share that our school has been assigned Psychological Services support for Semester 2. A psychologist will be on site two days a week to informally review supports for students. Formal counselling consultations will occur through referrals with direct parental or guardian consent.

Got Lunch?

We remain a closed campus at lunchtime. We want to remind families that students need to bring their lunch or eat the lunches provided by school. We are not able to provide access to microwaves for student use. As a reminder, we are not able to receive Skip the Dishes, Door Dash, Uber Eats, etc. in the main office. The driver will be asked to return the delivery to the restaurant.
